RSSThe East Carolina Alumni Association offers free subscriptions to news specifically related to Pirate alumni using RSS technology. In addition, the Pirate Nation can subscribe (free) to receive "podcasts" of the Association's weekly Radio show, A Pirate's Life for Me!, and our monthly Pirate Career Call series.
What is RSS? RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, is a popular means of sharing content (such as news headlines) without requiring readers to constantly visit a Web site to see what's new. RSS feeds contain headlines and hyperlinks to longer articles or Web pages.
A benefit of RSS is that it enables users to get updated information without having to sort through e-mails. Users sign up for regular notices of new information on topics of interest (called "feeds") and receive new content when it's available. RSS feeds work best to maintain a relationship initially established via e-mail.
Most significant, RSS is a "pull" technology rather than a "push" technology: By signing up for feeds, users are communicating their interest in a given topic rather than receiving information they may not want or read. A note of caution: When users sign up for an RSS feed, they expect regular and frequent updates. Some experts recommend that if information isn't being updated at least weekly, it may not be worth starting an RSS feed.
To use RSS, you will need an RSS reader, which combines a Web browser with a tool that summarizes the content of subscribed news feeds. Copy and paste the URL of any news feed into the application's "subscribe" dialogue.
There are many RSS readers available. Some are installed as applications on your computer, while others can be used through a Web browser.
