Over 60 Distinguished Service Awards have been given since 1982. This year’s recipient is:

The Honorary Alumni Award is given to individuals who did not attend East Carolina University, but have adopted the University as their own. This year’s award is given posthumously to:

Please join us at the Hilton Greenville on Friday, October 26 during Homecoming, as we recognize these deserving individuals at the East Carolina Alumni Association Awards Ceremony and Dinner. Honoring alumni achievement through public recognition is extremely important to the East Carolina Alumni Association, and it’s important for us to receive nominations year-round. The success of this program and the caliber of our award winners hinges on the letters and nominations that alumni like you send recommending fellow Pirates for our Awards. Nomination forms for each alumni award are available on our web site and are due by November 1 each year. Nominate someone today!

A New Beginning

RobertWright
Robert Wright, 1924

Summer ends, school begins. In September 1911, Chancellor Robert Wright opened the school year with the traditional student convocation. He spoke about students being away from home for the first time and experiencing homesickness. He told the students that he would not think much of them if they weren’t homesick, and would think less of them if they quit school to go home. “Why are you here? Why did you not select some other school?” Wright answered his own question by saying, “Each institution stands preeminently for some one thing and it is this that draws young men and women to it. This particular institution stands for but one thing. It has but one mission and every energy is bent to that one purpose: To make more efficient teachers for the schools of North Carolina.”

In 1945 interim president Howard McGinnis welcomed the freshman class with a list of twelve things that ECTC “desires to do for you.” In brief, these included knowledge, scholarship, improve thinking and reasoning skills, develop ability to form sound judgments, poise and refinement, tolerance and respect for others, habits of industry, “appreciation for the good, the true, the better things of life – high standards of integrity, morality, and personal conduct,” discernment of values and spirit of religious devotion.

Chancellor Ballard addressed the student body in 2005. He encouraged the students to do well in classes and to engage in service and projects outside the classroom. Lastly, he exhorted the students to be leaders. What memories do you have of East Carolina and its leaders, teachers and student leaders? Has East Carolina fulfilled its mission to you? Share your memories with the University Archivist by completing the Share a Memory online form.

Additionally, the University Archives needs your help in identifying photographs in the collections.  The unidentified images are posted here.
