It’s a great time of year! If you have yet to make plans to come home to ECU this month, read on to learn more about all of the opportunities October affords to reunite with former classmates and professors, friends and old roommates, and to remember why it’s a great time to be a Pirate. AlumniGolfNearly Sold Out! Golf Classic Supports Student Scholarships
Only a few player spaces remain for the ECU Alumni Scholarship Classic! Scheduled to take place on Friday, October 19 during Rivalry Weekend at Ironwood Golf & Residential Community, this four-person superball tournament supports ECU undergraduate student scholarships. Presented by the Hilton Greenville and sponsored by Ironwood Golf & Residential Community, O’Charley’s, and Brown & Wood, proceeds will fund twenty scholarships for the 2008-2009 school year. 19th Hole Scholarship Reception
Support students and gather with Pirates the night before the big game. Come to Ironwood for an evening of fun in support of student scholarships. The fall is a time when alumni like to reunite at East Carolina to catch up, remember college days, and have a good time with friends. A number of reunions will occur this fall, including Black Alumni, ECTC & ECC Golden Alumni, Military, and Wesley Foundation.
 
Military Reunion
October 5th and 6th marks the first reunion of ECU’s men and women in uniform. Activities are planned throughout the weekend to honor these special members of our University community. The East Carolina Alumni Association is proud to co-sponsor this event, honoring those who serve our country and defend our freedom.
 
Black Alumni Reunion
Come home to East Carolina during Homecoming for the Black Alumni Reunion. An after-hours social featuring a jazz reception with the Carroll Dashiell Combo followed by a dance party with DJ Tony “T-Rob” Robinson ’88 will be held at the Hilton Greenville on Saturday, October 27 beginning at 8:00 p.m. Other activities are planned for both Friday and Saturday of Homecoming.
 
ECTC & ECC Golden Alumni
The annual ECTC & ECC Golden Alumni Reunion is a special time for graduates of East Carolina Teachers College and East Carolina College. This year, we honor the Class of 1957 as Golden Alumni. Join us for a dinner and dance on Saturday, October 27 beginning at 7:00 p.m. It is sure to be a magical evening at the Hilton Greenville as The Collegians play favorites from yesteryear. Many other activities are planned throughout the weekend.
 
Wesley Foundation
The Wesley Foundation was an integral part of many students’ lives while attending East Carolina. This year the Wesley Foundation celebrates 66 years at ECU and invites you to attend their Homecoming Reunion on Saturday, October 27. Watch the Homecoming parade, view a slideshow of Wesley Foundation highlights from 1941-2007, hear from two former directors, and enjoy a pig pickin’ lunch. Wesley Foundation Singers will also entertain attendees.

Join fellow New York Metro ECU alumni and Pirate fans for the 5th Annual New York Metro Football Kickoff PartyPDF on Saturday, October 20 in the “Back Room” at Brother Jimmy’s BBQ Bait Shack! Enjoy great “southern comfort” foods like Cajun popcorn shrimp, pulled pork quesadillas and ECU hot wings. We’ll also cheer on the Pirates against in-state rival NC State as we watch the game on the big screen. We’ve invited local NC State alumni to join us, so this will be an exciting afternoon. Pirate Career Calls return Thursday, October 4. Held from noon to 1 p.m. EST, Pirate Career Calls are free to all alumni and friends of East Carolina. When you register for a class you will be given a toll-free phone number to call on the day of your class and a PowerPoint presentation to help you follow along.

The new Voyages of Discovery Lecture Series, through the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences and sponsored, in part, by the East Carolina Alumni Association, is an experience meant to celebrate the spirit of exploration and discovery that is at the heart of any liberal arts education. Don’t miss this month’s exciting lecture, “On the Origins & Future of Humanity,” presented by Dr. Richard Leakey, world-renowned paleoanthropologist, archaeologist, and conservationist, author, and professor of anthropology at Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, NY on Wednesday, October 10. The Adventures of Pee Dee the Pirate, a new children’s book authored by ECU alumnus Ralph Finch ‘67 and illustrated by ECU alumnus Mike Litwin ‘01 will make its debut during Centennial Homecoming. A colorfully illustrated story of Pee Dee the Pirate’s adventure as a new student at ECU, this book walks readers through a day-in-the-life of an ECU student. Pee Dee discovers the treasures at Joyner Library, attends class with fellow Pirates, daydreams of making a winning touchdown and imagines participating in the Homecoming Parade. Whether you're a young Pirate or a young Pirate at heart, this book is sure to evoke Pirate Pride!

The Adventures of Pee Dee the Pirate will be on sale at Dowdy Student Stores and U.B.E. beginning Saturday, October 27. Author Ralph Finch and illustrator Mike Litwin will sign books during the morning at UBE in uptown Greenville and at the football stadium prior to the game during that same day. All proceeds from sales ofThe Adventures of Pee Dee the Pirate will be given to East Carolina University. Don Sweeting '85

SGA

Don Sweeting ’85 is the executive vice president of golf and club operations at Pinehurst Resort, site of the 1999 and 2005 U.S. Open tournaments. Sweeting, who played on the ECU golf team for four years and was MVP in 1983, formerly was general manager of the Golf Club at Indigo Run in Hilton Head, S.C., which, like Pinehurst Resort, is owned and managed by ClubCorp. “I love Pinehurst. I look forward to maintaining its high stature in golf, and to growing the membership as a premier club.”
 
A Class A professional with the PGA of America, Sweeting has several playing honors to his credit, most recently as the winner of the 2006 Hilton Head Pro Championship.

Adrian Cullin ’03, ’04 and Jamie Edwards ’05

Adrian Cullin ’03, ’04 and Jamie Edwards ’05 are two of the Alumni Association’s newest volunteers. Having been in Charlotte for two years without seeing much activity from Charlotte alumni, this duo volunteered to revitalize the Charlotte Alumni chapter as Regional Contacts. Since assuming this role in February, Adrian and Jamie have coordinated a number of activities for Charlotte alumni, including a Carolina Beer & Beverage Tour and Tasting, a night at the Charlotte Bobcats, and plans to attend a STOMP theatrical performance. Adrian and Jamie hope to get ideas from other Charlotte alumni for fun and interesting activities. The East Carolina Alumni Association would like to extend a heart-felt “Thank You!” to Adrian and Jamie for their dedication to ECU, volunteering their time to planning great alumni activities and support of the Alumni Association.
