Alumni interaction with students solidifies relationships with the University. The Alumni Association also invests over $50,000 in student programs, services, and scholarships. From the ECU Ambassadors and Magnolia Belles, to senior week events and work-study opportunities, the Alumni Association’s student programs instill service and leadership in our students, preparing them to be citizens of the world.

East Carolina Alumni Association
2007-2008 Year In Review

It's been an incredible year for the East Carolina Alumni Association. With our Alumni Association membership increase of more than 1,000 new members, we were busier than ever planning programs and various communications to inform, involve, and serve members of the ECU family.

Nearly 2,500 Pirates came home to East Carolina to participate in Homecoming 2007 and the many reunions held by affinity groups. The Alumni Association presented four Outstanding Alumni Awards, one Distinguished Service Award, and one Honorary Alumnus Award.

Our family-friendly Alumni Tailgate continues to be a hit among Pirates of all ages. With live entertainment, great raffle prizes, children's games, and plenty of food and Pirate beverages, our Tailgate is a new ECU tradition. More than 5,200 Pirates took part in Tailgate 2007, the most to date.

In the fall, the 2007 ECU Alumni Scholarship Golf Classic raised more than $25,000! More than 150 golfers enjoyed a day on the links and the inaugural 19th Hole Reception.

In February we introduced Industry Inside Out at The Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta, GA. This unique experience gives participants a behind-the-scenes look into various businesses, non-profit organizations, governmental offices, and educational facilities.

Spring 2008 brought the inaugural Pirate Alumni Road Race and Fun Run was a great way to exercise for a good cause: ECU student scholarships. Our first race included 175 runners and raised more than $6,000.

Published Pirates, a new series that highlights ECU authors, debuted in March. Candace McKenzie '92, "The Dating Dahling" and author of Be a Dating Dahling, shared practical advice and tips for how to get out of a fantasy world and into the real world of dating.

Servire, the Alumni Association's magazine, is a significant expansion of our former newsletter The Pirate's Chantey. Servire highlights the accomplishments of our alumni and includes information about upcoming alumni events, career advice from the ECU Career Center, and news and notes from colleges and schools.

Each year that the Alumni Association grows we are able to offer more programs and better communications to serve the ECU family. If you are already a member, thank you! If not, then show your Pirate Pride and join today.

Summer Outings
Ahoy mateys! We invite alumni to attend Freshmen Sendoffs, the Alumni Association's summer outings, to wish the Class of 2012 best of luck before they Walk the Plank as new students in August. These family-friendly outings are planned in a number of cities in North Carolina, New Jersey, and Virginia. Share your ECU experience with our newest Pirates and their families. New York alumni raise $7,000

Pirates in the New York metro area recently held a Centennial Scholarship Celebration at the elegant TPC Jasna Polana Golf and Social Club. Special guests Chancellor Steve Ballard and ECU Head Men's Basketball Coach Mack McCarthy attended this scholarship fundraiser. More than 50 alumni played a round of golf on the championship course and participated in the intimate evening event with the Chancellor. Thanks to these dedicated New York metro alumni the golf tournament raised more than $7,000 for ECU student scholarships. Great job!

ECU Faculty Awards
Membership in the East Carolina Alumni Association helps support faculty recognition, and we are proud to sponsor annual Outstanding Teacher awards for ECU faculty.

Based on the “Seven Characteristics for Effective Teaching” any full-time faculty member who has taught at ECU for three or more years is eligible to be considered for an Outstanding Teaching award. Nominated by members of their academic unit, Outstanding Teacher award recipients exemplify the principle on which ECU was founded—teaching. Three faculty members were recently presented with 2008 Outstanding Teaching awards:
  • Robert L. Jones Award—Dr. Fred Schadler of the Department of Finance in the College of Business
  • Dr. Heather Vance-Chalcraft of the Department of Biology in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences
  • Dr John Howard, III of the School of Communication in the College of Fine Arts and Communication
