Auction and Golf Tournament Success
The Alumni Association would like to extend a sincere "thank you" to the many businesses and individuals that made our Pirate's Bounty Scholarship Auction and ECU Alumni Scholarship Classic overwhelming successes. It is through the support of more than 160 golfers, 23 sponsors, and the businesses and individuals that donated more than 100 auction items that we were able to raise more than $30,000 for ECU student scholarships.

In the last four years the Alumni Association has awarded 62 scholarships to deserving students. In the spring of 2009 thirty $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2009-2010 academic year to ECU undergraduates who excel in the classroom and serve the university and their community. Do you know an undergraduate who qualifies for an Alumni Scholarship? Encourage them to complete an application by January 30, 2009 to be considered.

Pee Dee Book Contributes to Alumni Association

Author Ralph Finch '67 and illustrator Mike Litwin '01, the creative minds behind ECU's mascot book The Adventures of Pee Dee the Pirate have contributed part of their book's proceeds to the Alumni Association. Finch and Litwin presented Paul J. Clifford, Alumni Association president and CEO, a $1,000 check during Alumni Tailgate on Saturday, October 18.

Rather than keep the book's proceeds for themselves, these Pirates have chosen to donate 100% of sales to various departments at East Carolina. The Alumni Association donation will be applied to our scholarship program. Thank you Ralph and Mike!

Need a unique gift for the holidays? The Adventures of Pee Dee the Pirate will make a great gift for Pirates of any age! Pick up your copy today at ECU's Dowdy Student Stores or U.B.E.

Adam Mitchell '00, '02

Adam Mitchell ’00, ‘02 is town manager of Ayden, North Carolina, a position he has held since November 2003. Ayden, which is located in Pitt County, has a population of more than 4,500 and hosts the annual Ayden Collard Festival. In 2005 Mitchell partnered with the ECU Career Center to create an internship opportunity in the Ayden City Manager’s office for one lucky East Carolina student. Mitchell served on the steering committee for Pitt County Voices in 2006, and currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association Down East Heartwalk, and Community Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization that provides letter jackets and scholarships for student athletes at Ayden-Grifton High School.

“The Alumni Association is my way to keep in touch and to give back to ECU. If I had to do college all over, I would do everything the same. I was fortunate to have leadership roles…as president of the Student Union, on the committee for Barefoot On the Mall, and as a member of the Judicial Board for a year.” Mitchell was also an ECU Ambassador, the student organization sponsored by the Alumni Association. Through the Ambassadors, Adam met his now wife, Bridget Katana Mitchell ’01, ’05, with whom he has a daughter Adelynn. “I got so much out of my time at ECU, it just wouldn’t be right not to give back. ECU was the foundation for my family, and for that I am thankful.”

Julie Blondell '88

Julie Brogan Blondell ’88 works as a Certified Hand Therapist at Healthsouth in Chicago. When it came time for her 20th class reunion at ECU Julie helped mark the occasion by working with the East Carolina Alumni Association to plan a weekend full of reunion activities on October 18-19 for her fellow 1988 Occupational Therapy graduates. The 1988 OT graduates were the first from the university, and as pioneers of the program forged close friendships among their group of 25. These close-knit relationships fueled Julie's desire to reconnect with her former classmates and plan a reunion.

The OT Class of 1988 reunion was the first time many OT alumni returned to campus since graduation. They enjoyed Alumni Tailgate, the Memphis vs. ECU football game, and a reunion brunch and flashback slide show. Participants were also taken on a guided tour of the new Allied Health Sciences building and Laupus Library. Thanks to Julie's assistance in planning the reunion and her personal phone calls to former classmates the reunion was a success!
