Make Connections through Participation

Events and programs are developed and offered each year for alumni to come home to East Carolina, either on campus or with alumni and friends across the Pirate Nation. Examples of these events include Homecoming, reunions, Tailgates, the Chancellor’s Tour, and golf tournaments. Member dues support these and other opportunities for alumni to stay connected to campus, former classmates, and our world-class faculty.

Barbara Kelly ‘61

Barbara Kelly is an extraordinary example of the Pirate spirit, regardless of 38 years with the Department of Athletics at the University of Virginia! Kelly, a native of Garner, NC showed a passion for sports during her high school years, as a four-year letter winner and basketball team co-captain. She was offered one of the first basketball scholarships in Wake County to Pineland Junior College, but chose instead to venture to Campbell University where she played basketball with the Camels for two seasons. Kelly transferred to East Carolina in 1958 where she would go on to earn a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education three years later. Kelly earned a master’s of education degree from The College of William and Mary in 1971.

Always a trailblazer, Kelly became the first full-time female athletics staff member at UVA when she was hired in 1971 as the assistant director of intramural and physical education. Women had only recently been admitted to the university as undergraduates, yet with Kelly’s encouragement and passion, intramural and club sports saw success. Kelly created and coached multiple women’s intercollegiate athletic teams. In 2002, the Atlantic Coast Conference recognized Barbara Kelly as the founder and first tournament director of the ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament 25 years prior. During her tenure in Charlottesville, Kelly helped create a nationally competitive women’s intercollegiate athletics program, which has grown to include 13 varsity sports. Kelly is currently the assistant athletics director for planning and special projects at Virginia and plans to retire in 2009.

In 2007, the ECU Women’s Roundtable recognized Kelly’s outstanding achievements and leadership in sports in “A Legacy of Leadership: One Hundred Incredible ECU Women.”

Ken ’68, ’71 and Kay ’76 Chalk

Ken Chalk earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees in business administration from East Carolina University. Kay Haskell Chalk earned her master’s degree in elementary education from ECU in 1976. Together the Chalks have volunteered in many diverse ways since their time as students at East Carolina.

Ken is former chair of the East Carolina University Foundation Board of Directors, and is Board Co-Chair of the BB&T Center for Leadership Development at East Carolina University. Ken is a founding member of the Chancellor’s Society at ECU. He has served as a board member of the N.C. Small Business and Technology Development Center and the Entrepreneurial Development Council of Eastern North Carolina, and as a former dean of N.C. School of Banking (sponsored by the N.C. Bankers Association).

Kay has been instrumental in developing the Women’s Roundtable, a philanthropic organization of women for ECU. As chair of the programs committee, Kay coordinated “A Legacy of Leadership: One Hundred Incredible ECU Women” to mark East Carolina’s Centennial last October. This event surveyed the many leadership roles East Carolina Alumnae have embarked upon during their professional careers. As thanks for Kay's enduring leadership and commitment to the project, she too was honored in the group.

Most recently, BB&T Corp. has chosen to honor the Chalks for Ken’s 33 years of service to BB&T with a $250,000 gift to ECU. This gift will endow two scholarships for East Carolina’s Access Scholarship Program. Ken recognizes East Carolina’s responsibility to provide education to students from all backgrounds and said of the endowment, “The Access Scholarship program is essential to help students who could not otherwise afford higher education to attend ECU and become successful leaders in their communities.” In the same spirit, Ken and Kay have chosen to remain connected to their alma mater through membership in their Alumni Association. The Chalks are Lifetime Members of the East Carolina Alumni Association which awarded 24 student scholarships last April and will award 30 student scholarships in 2009.
