Roll up your sleeves and lend a helping hand as ECU alumni and friends across the Pirate Nation celebrate Service Month during April! In the spirit of Servire the East Carolina Alumni Association has deemed April as Service Month and asks that all alumni and friends of East Carolina participate in a service project in their area.
There are many ways you can serve your University, community, church, family, and friends. Many of our regional leaders will plan service projects for alumni groups across the Pirate Nation, but individuals are welcome to volunteer wherever help is needed. We’ve come up with a list of service project ideas to make it even easier! A few examples are:
- Donate food to a local food bank
- Pick up litter at a local park or along a highway
- Spend time with an elderly neighbor
- Donate blood
- Collect items to be recycled
Interested in heading up a service project in your area? The Alumni Association will gladly assist you in promoting planned service projects to fellow alumni in your area. Contact Kendra Alexander at 800-ECU-GRAD or 252-328-1958 by March 1, 2009 to get started.
The impact we can make together is much greater than what any of us could do alone! Live the University’s motto of Servire, to serve, by participating in Service Month.

Thomas Williams '80, '82
Thomas Williams ’80, ’82 has extended his passion for education into an impressive professional career, and though he has been an educator for years, he still enjoys learning. After completing an undergraduate degree at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in 1976, Williams earned his Masters in education and EdS in administration from East Carolina University in 1980 and 1982, respectively. In 2009, Williams is again studying at ECU, this time seeking his EdD.
Williams served the public schools of North Carolina for thirty-two years prior to founding Strategic Educational Alliances, Inc. in 2007. During his career Williams has been a teacher, coach, principal, and assistant superintendent He has also served as the executive director of former Governor Hunt’s Business Committee for Education from 1994 through 2000. Governor Hunt recognized Williams with the state’s highest honor, the “Order of the Long Leaf Pine” in 2000 as well as a Distinguished Service award from the State Board of Education and the Department of Public Instruction.
Beginning in 2000 Williams held Granville County Schools’ highest leadership role, superintendent. During this time, Williams was inducted into ECU’s “Educators Hall of Fame,” and twice recognized as a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow for outstanding community service in 2003 and 2007 by the Oxford Rotary Club. In 2005 Williams was honored with the Outstanding Alumnus Award from UNC-Pembroke.
Williams served on the College of Education Advancement Council at ECU for several years. His work on the Advancement Council includes expansion of the Educator’s Hall of Fame recognition and scholarship program. In April, 2008 Williams accepted the position of Chair of the Advancement Council and continues to provide an example of leadership and service in this role. Williams hopes to continue to build the Hall of Fame scholarship endowment fund and provide support to the College of Education’s new dean, Dr. Linda Patriarca.
