Edith Warren ’60 and ’73

Edith Doughtie Warren graduated from East Carolina in 1960 with her B.S. in Elementary Education and earned her master’s in education in 1973. Warren is a retired teacher who also served as principal at Sam Bundy Elementary School, making her the first full-time female principal in Pitt County. Warren has experience as a small business owner, opening Caroline’s Children’s Boutique in Farmville.

Warren is presently a North Carolina State Representative. She has represented District 8, which includes Pitt and Martin Counties for the past six terms of the NC House. As a democratic representative, Warren serves on the Agriculture; Water Resources and Infrastructure; and Commerce, Small Business, and Entrepreneurship Committees. She is also Chair of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Committee and Vice Chair of the Education and Appropriations Committees. Warren can often be seen at University and community events across the East, including the Centennial ribbon-cutting celebration for the newly renovated Belk Building, home for the College of Health and Human Performance, and the recent dedication of the Carolina Township Volunteer Fire Department’s new firehouse in Stokes, NC.

Warren’s husband, the late Billy Nunn Warren ’55, was an intramurals tennis champion at East Carolina College. The story of his twenty-six year battle with heart disease aided ECU in securing funding for the Brody School of Medicine’s cardiac and vascular center. Representative Warren was honored during “A Legacy of Leadership: 100 Incredible ECU Women” in 2007 and has received local honors including the Farmville Citizen of the Year and the Pitt County Principals Association Special Service Award. She resides in Farmville, NC.

Liz Garrison ‘94

Elizabeth “Liz” Mullican Garrison is a 1994 East Carolina Graduate. While attending ECU, she studied Child Development and Family relations in the College of Human Ecology.

Garrison currently serves as a Regional Contact for the East Carolina Alumni Association in central Virginia. She helped lead the charge to secure East Carolina University license plates for Pirates living in the Commonwealth of Virginia. In January of 2009, Virginia Pirates met their goal of more than 350 applications required by the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles to begin production of the plates. The applications have been sent to the Virginia DMV for final processing and will soon be seen on highways and byways throughout the state. Future Virginia drivers will be able to request their Pirates plates directly from the DMV now that the initial requirements for organizational plates have been met.

Garrison and her husband, David, live in Glen Allen, Virginia and frequently attend alumni events in the region. Prior to moving to Virginia, Garrison led a similar effort in her home state of Maryland to bring ECU license plates to Pirates living in that state. Information on how to obtain a Maryland license plate can be obtained through the Alumni Association.

Garrison has been a member of the East Carolina Alumni Association since 2006.
