Five Tips to Prevent Home Heating Fires
| When it’s time to turn up the heat in your home this winter to battle the icy cold, follow these simple tips to prevent the chance of fire:
- Hire a professional to inspect and clean your furnace. Maintaining your furnace and ensuring that it’s operating properly and efficiently will save you money and keep you free from worry.
- Open your windows when you first turn on your furnace. Choose a warm day to let your furnace burn off the dust and dirt that have collected on its heating element. A residual odor is not harmful, but if the furnace rumbles or produces black smoke, call 911 and evacuate the premises.
- Clean your chimney. Before you cozy up to the fireplace, open the flue and check for obstructions that can cause a build-up of harmful carbon monoxide. Hire a chimney sweep to inspect for creosote, a substance that gradually builds up as wood burns and can ignite in the chimney flue.

- Handle propane-powered equipment carefully. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, store cylinders outside, and call 911 if you smell a strong odor of gas.

Michael McNally '99, '01 Michael McNally ’99, ’01 is the new president and CEO of the Burke County Chamber of Commerce. Nestled in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in Morganton, NC, Burke County’s Chamber “is an advocate for business interests, promotes economic growth, provides leadership in community affairs, helps to enhance the quality of life for the people of Burke County, and provides services and programs for its members.” (BurkeCounty.Org) McNally said of his new position, “I am thankful for the opportunity to work for the Burke County chamber. These are unprecedented times for most of us, but I am excited about the opportunity to work with business, government, and agency leaders to position Burke County, and our region, as the best place in North Carolina to live, work and play.”
Prior to his appointment at the Burke County Chamber, McNally served as vice president for government affairs for the Catawba County Chamber of Commerce in Hickory, NC. He also has experience in the financial industry. McNally received a Bachelor’s in business administration management from ECU in 1999 and then earned an MBA in 2001. McNally and wife Christina Abbott McNally ’98 have a daughter Cameron and are expecting twin girls in the next few weeks.
Robbie Britt '05 When Robbie Britt ’05 moved to Memphis, TN he wanted to stay connected with fellow ECU alumni and Pirates fans, but the closest established ECU groups were in Nashville, three hours away. After meeting a few Pirates around town, Britt decided to officially start an ECU group in Memphis and became a Regional Contact for the Alumni Association. In this role, Britt helps the Alumni Association plan at least one activity in the Memphis area per year. Lucky for him, the Gridiron Pirates will play in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl on Saturday, January 2 and Britt has served as the Alumni Association’s Memphis contact in planning the Pirate Party on Beale Street. “I have a local’s perspective on fun things to do. I’m hoping to be somewhat of a liaison for Memphis, answering any questions, or giving suggestions on local food or entertainment.”
As a Regional Contact, Britt will also be the first point of contact for alumni in the area to reconnect with the University and Alumni Association. He hopes to grow the Memphis area alumni group to serve those who want to stay connected and involved with their alma mater.
Britt is a senior programmer analyst with FedEx and designs and maintains software tools used by FedEx sales employees around the globe. He is an avid Pirates fan and is excited to attend the Liberty Bowl.
