Charlotte attorney R. Lee Myers '73 was recently honored by Governor Bev Perdue with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Created in 1965, this prestigious award is presented to individuals who have a proven record of extraordinary service to the state, contributions to their communities, extra effort in their careers, and many years of service to their organizations. Myers is in good company in this group with notable recipients including poet Maya Angelou, basketball all-star Michael Jordan, journalist Charles Kuralt, and artist/designer Bob Timberlake. Myers has practiced law in Mecklenburg County since 1976 and currently practices with his son Matthew Myers at Myers Law Firm, PLLC. In 1987 Myers was elected to the Matthews Town Council and in 1991 was elected Mayor of Matthews, a post which he held through December 2009. He is a licensed pilot, enjoys off shore sailing, mountain biking, snow skiing, hiking, and camping.
Angela McCall Hill '01
Angela McCall Hill '01 is one of many dedicated volunteers for the East Carolina Alumni Association. As an assistant principal at Harnett Central Middle School in Angier, NC, Hill stays busy educating the leaders of tomorrow, but always finding time to serve her University.
"I've ways been interested in volunteering and making my community a better place. As a young lady growing up in Harnett County, I volunteered through organization such as Girl Scouts and The Big Brother/Big Sister Program. After graduating from ECU with my elementary education degree, I decided to give back by teaching in the community that helped me become the woman I am. Now, as a volunteer with the East Carolina Alumni Association I can give back to my community through service projects, while getting the word out about East Carolina and the wonderful contributions its graduates make across the community, state, and world-wide. It's a win-win!," said Hill.
For Service Month, Hill planned a service project to improve literacy in Harnett County. Alumni and friends can participate by making monetary donations or contributing needed learning materials to Harnett County Literacy. 2010 marks the 25th anniversary of Harnett County Literacy, which provides free, basic adult literacy and English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction for residents. Click here for more information about this service project.
Hill is active in the Alumni Association, Homecoming events, and Black Alumni events. She credits ECU for her success as an educator. "My four years at ECU inspired me to encourage local students who are looking to find their place in the world to look no further than East Carolina University."
