Distinguished Service Award Recipients


Phillip Dixon '71
Phil Dixon is an attorney and partner at Dixon, Doub & Conner in Greenville and has played an important role in helping shape the East Carolina University community over the years. Dixon currently serves on the UNC Board of Governors and is a former Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He was a charter member of the ECU Commerce Club and the Pitt County, Greater Greenville Alumni Chapter and has served as a leader for many fundraising efforts at East Carolina. Dixon is a past president of the Alumni Association and received the Outstanding Alumnus award in 1984.
  

Linda Lynn Tripp '80, '81
Linda Tripp earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia before attending East Carolina where she earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree. In 1992 she established and served as President of Carolina Court Reporters, Inc., a private court reporting agency in Greenville and in 2005 created Carolina Specialized Imaging Inc., a media production company. Tripp serves as President of the Pitt County Pirate Club, President of FRIENDS of the S. Rudolph Alexander Performing Arts Series, and was recently recognized as the Greenville-Pitt County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year. 

Honorary Alumni Awards Recipients


Dr. Hervy Kornegay
Dr. Hervy Kornegay is a family physician at the rural health clinic in Mount Olive and is on the community faculty as a clinical instructor at the Brody School of Medicine. Additionally, Hervy’s wife Deborah ‘71 and five of their seven children are ECU alumni. Four of their children received merit scholarships and the eldest son was a Brody Fellow at the medical school. The Kornegay’s are actively involved in the Parents Council and are members of the Pirate Club and Friends of the School of Theatre and Dance. 
  

Jim Woods (posthumously)
Jim Woods is credited with the creation of the Pirate Sports Network and served as its play-by-play announcer, affectionately dubbed the “Voice of the Pirates.” As news anchor and talk show host on WNCT-TV Ch. 9 Woods promoted the University in ways that extended beyond his responsibilities as a community broadcaster. Woods worked with then Chancellor Leo Jenkins in broadcasting his news conferences on issues that helped shape East Carolina such as the establishment of the medical school.

Outstanding Alumni Award Recipients


Charles "Charlie" Bishop '59
Charles “Charlie” Bishop of North Myrtle Beach, SC, now retired, was a dedicated teacher and coach in the North Carolina school system for 35 years. During Bishop’s career he coached track, cross country, basketball and football and had an overall record of 1,664 wins and 125 losses. Bishop received 46 awards as Coach of the Year and was twice named National High School Coach of the year in 1977 and 1987. 
  

Lisa Rowland Callahan '83, '87
Lisa Callahan MD of New York, NY, is the Director of Player Care for the NBA New York Knicks and WNBA New York Liberty teams, co-founder and Medical Director, Women’s Sports Medicine Center Hospital for Special Surgery and Attending Physician, Hospital for Special Surgery, Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine, Weill Medical College of Cornell University New York, NY. Callahan has also served Medical contributor to ABC News/Good Morning America and Lifetime’s “Speaking of Women’s Health” and is author of the book “The Fitness Factor.” 
  

Douglas J. Morgan, Jr. '88
Douglas Morgan of South Riding, VA, serves as Supervisory Special Agent, National Program Manager for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS)/Office of Investigations, Contraband Smuggling Division in Washington, D.C. Morgan manages and directs several national investigative programs and initiatives within the DHS. He also manages and coordinates investigative matters with other U.S. entities working abroad as well as foreign government officials. Morgan is the recipient for numerous awards and commendations including the Commissioners Award in 2000, the premier U.S. Customs Service investigative award and the U.S. Customs Service National Commissioners Award for the seizure of over 20,000 pounds of cocaine, 30 arrests and $1,000,000 seized. 
  

Thomas Spaulding, Jr. '92
Thomas Spaulding of Denver, CO, serves as founder and CEO of Leader’s Challenge and was recently named CEO and President of Up with People. Prior to founding Leader’s Challenge in 2000, Spaulding was the Director of Corporate Affiliates for the international non-profit global leadership program, Up with People. Spaulding has a master’s degree in Non-Profit Management from Regis University, and he received an MBA in 1998 from Bond University in Australia, studying on a full scholarship as a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar.

Robert L. Jones Award for Outstanding Faculty


Paul J. Schenarts MD
Paul J. Schenarts MD, of Greenville, NC, recipient of the Robert L. Jones Outstanding Teaching Award, is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the Brody School of Medicine. Dr. Schenarts is in Trauma Surgery and Surgical Critical Care and is director of the Surgical Clerkship. He has an active role in the education of third and fourth year medical students as well as students from the Physicians Assistant Program. He serves as educator of all levels of residents in the Surgery, Emergency Medicine, OB/GYN, and Physical Medicine/Rehabilitation training programs.
