2010 Scholarship Recipients



 Lauren Brooke Ashley
ECTC Scholarship Recipient

Lauren Brooke Ashley is a sophomore clinical laboratory science major from Washington, NC. Lauren is an honor student and member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Delta Delta Sigma Pre-Dental Society, and has recently been contacted to join the Student Service Council Committee. She has been recognized on the Dean’s Lists. Lauren is also a participant of the Jarvis Leadership Program and she tutors with the Pirate Tutoring Center each week. She was an honors undergraduate assistant in the microbiology laboratory and honors volunteer for the Buddy Program. Lauren has volunteered with the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, Missions of Mercury Dental Clinic, and the First Friends program. Lauren’s mother and father are 1988 graduates of ECU.
   
 Roberta Woodlief Bellamy
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Roberta Woodlief Bellamy is a senior family and community services major from Kinston, NC. While a student at Lenoir Community College, Roberta was an ambassador, served as the College’s Poet Laureate, and won the Diversity Day Essay Contest. She also received the North Carolina Community Colleges academic excellence award. Since her transfer from LCC to ECU, Roberta has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List, maintaining a 4.0 GPA. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi along with Phi Theta Kappa. She is also a member of Amnesty International and is active in the area of “Prisoners of Conscience,” and has been a sponsor for World Vision since 1999. Roberta visits the Carolina House retirement community to read to residents for an hour each week and interns at Walter B. Jones Alcohol and Drug Abuse Treatment Center. Along with volunteering and interning, Roberta has acquired two black belts in martial arts and has studied the skill for 15 years.
   
 Ian Luke Bryan
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Ian Luke Bryan is a sophomore double major in biology and chemistry from Greenville, NC. Ian is a member of the Honors Program and was also a presenter at the Undergraduate Research Symposium in 2009. Ian is currently the fundraising chair for ECU’s Relay for Life and is the treasurer for ECU Honors Council. He has volunteered 250 hours each year since 2005 for organizations such as Pitt County Community Schools & Recreation, Pitt County Relay For Life, D.H. Conley High School, and Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Along with his volunteer work, Ian is also an Eagle Scout, youth soccer coach, and a team captain for the Umstead Relay Team. He maintains two part time jobs and has been recognized on the Dean’s List. Ian’s mother is a 1982 and 1987 graduate of East Carolina University, and his great-grandmother graduated from East Carolina Teachers Training School in 1915.
   

 Kori Elizabeth Burton
Tidewater Virginia Alumni Chapter Scholarship Recipient

Kori Elizabeth Burton is a freshman nursing major with a minor in French from Virginia Beach, VA. Kori is the Student Government Association senator for the College of Nursing. She is a member of the Jarvis Leadership Hall and has received recognition on the Dean’s List. Kori is a member of Christian Campus Crusade where she attended the fall conference weekend retreat. She is a member of the ECU Hoops Pep Band and played with the Marching Pirates. Kori volunteers weekly at Pitt County Memorial Hospital and has participated on the Relay For Life retention committee. She recently received Heartsaver CPR certification.
   

 Ryan Calhoun Cole
ECTC Scholarship Recipient

Ryan Calhoun Cole is a sophomore theatre major with a concentration in design and production from Fredericksburg, VA. Ryan is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society and the University Honors program. He has received the Friends of the School of Theatre and Dance scholarship and been recognized on the Dean’s List. Ryan is also a member of Baptist Campus Ministries. He has been technical director, master carpenter, and shop assistant to numerous plays hosted by ECU’s Theatre Department. Ryan has also donated 40 hours to Storybook Theatre, a group dedicated to child audiences. His father is a 1985 graduate of ECU.
   

 Alexandria Kirstie Conerly
ECTC Scholarship Recipient

Alexandria Kirstie Conerly is a junior environmental health and safety major from Raleigh, NC. Alexandria is a member of the SGA Elections Committee and she has been recognized on both the Dean’s and Chancellor’s Lists. She is president of ECO-Pirates and is in charge of the Ink Cartridge Recycling Program on ECU’s campus. Alexandria is a member of Baptist Campus Ministries where she is a vocalist in their worship band and mission committee member where she has raised funds for the Carolina Pregnancy Center of Greenville. She has volunteered more than 65 hours for clean-up projects and recycling awareness events along with promotion of environmental health. Her mother is a 1981 graduate of ECU.
   
 Anna Vaughn Creech
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Anna Vaughn Creech is a junior graphic design major from Tarboro, NC. Anna is a member of Design Associates and recently attended the Visual Arts Forum as a representative for Design Associates. She currently interns at The Daily Reflector and has worked as an ad designer and photographer for the East Carolinian. Anna has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from The University of Wollongong in Australia where she was a member of the dance club. Anna has been highly involved in mission trips, traveling to Guatemala and China. She was also the Assistant for Youth and Education Ministries at her church. In her spare time Anna performs in a local band and has even performed at ECU’s Battle of the Bands, coming in second place in 2008.
   
 Carolyn Hannah Edson
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Carolyn Hannah Edson is a senior biology major from Greenville, NC. Carolyn is member of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and the Golden Key International Honor Society, where she is also the director of service. She is president of the Student Organization of Animal Rights and a member of Tri-Beta. Carolyn has volunteered at Rocking Horse Ranch, food banks, the REAP program, the Humane Society of Eastern North Carolina, and has helped paint the ECU Pediatrics Clinic. She has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List for her 4.0 GPA. Carolyn danced formally for fourteen years and has many years of piano instruction, which she continues today. Carolyn’s father is a 2000 graduate of ECU.
   
 Abby Kathryn Fare
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Abby Kathryn Fare is a junior elementary education major with a concentration in child studies from Wilmington, NC. Abby was inducted into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars in 2008 and she has been mentioned on the Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists. Abby is a member of Alpha Xi Delta and served on the sorority’s executive council for two years. She has received the Slaymaker-Kinsey Academic Achievement Award from AX∆ for having the highest GPA in the chapter. Abby is also a member of ECU’s Student Pirate Club, the E.D.U.C.A.T.E. club, and participates in teacher toolbox workshops. She has volunteered at the Little Willie Center, with Greenville’s REAP organization, and for the Boys & Girls Club along with numerous practicums in Pitt County Elementary Schools where she teaches, observes, and tutors. She has also raised funds for Autism Speaks and Relay For Life. Abby is involved with Alpha Xi Delta’s intramural sports that include football, volleyball, and basketball. Abby’s father is a 1972 graduate, her mother is a 1975 graduate, and her brother is a 2004 graduate of ECU.
   

 Krystal Lynn Hicks
ECTC Scholarship Recipient

Krystal Lynn Hicks is a junior double major in accounting and management information systems from Mount Olive, NC. Krystal is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma and the Student Accounting Society. She has been recognized on the Dean’s List and has received the Institute for Management Accountants scholarship and the NCSECU scholarship. Krystal is the president of Alternative Spring Break where she has participated in house builds for Habitat for Humanity. She is resident advisor in Cotton Residence Hall, where she has been inducted into the Resident Advisor Hall of Fame. Krystal has interned as an accountant at Tryon Palace. Her mother is a 1987 and 2002 graduate and her father is a 1986 graduate of ECU.
   
 Stephanie DeAnna Howard
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Stephanie DeAnna Howard is a sophomore nursing major from Charlotte, NC. Stephanie is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, and Gama Beta Phi Honor Society. Stephanie has also received an award for academic excellence from ECU’s Ledonia Wright Cultural Center. She has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List each semester in attendance at ECU for her 4.0 GPA. In 2009 Stephanie achieved Certified Nursing Assistant I status. She is an active member of the Black Student Union and their affiliate, Icon Modeling, where she is a member of the event committee. She is also a member of the Marching Pirates and as a veteran marcher she assists new members of the band. Stephanie also works with ECU’s Volunteer and Service Learning Center where she has joined up with ECU Reads and ECU Pen Friends. She has also volunteered outside of ECU at events such as The Heart & Stroke Walk, PirateFest, and blood drives. Stephanie has also been involved in intramural flag football and Young Ladies for Christ, a church organization.
   

 Sarah Howell Kinsley
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Sarah Howell Kinsley is a junior chemistry major and Hispanic studies minor from Greenville, NC. Sarah is a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and has received the EC Scholars Bookstore Scholarship. She has volunteered for the Pirate Tutoring Center since 2009 and is now employed as the lead chemistry tutor. Sarah volunteers for Relay For Life, Habitat for Humanity, and blood drives for the American Red Cross. She has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List for her 4.0 GPA and has maintained two jobs during her studies at ECU. Sarah’s mother is a 1982 graduate of ECU.
   

 Danielle Nicole Nilges
Megan Grace Lavinder Memorial Scholarship Recipient

Danielle Nicole Nilges is a senior rehabilitation studies major with a minor in business administration from Gibsonville, NC. Danielle is interning in the vocational evaluation unit at Pitt County Memorial Hospital and will apply to ECU’s Graduate School for the vocational evaluation program. She has received recognition on both the Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists. Danielle currently serves on the executive leadership team at ECU’s Newman Catholic Student Center. She has also been involved with the ECU Campus Christian Fellowship and the First-Year Experience. Danielle has volunteered more than 200 hours to organizations such as: Diocese of Raleigh, Alternative Spring Break, 100 Boys Club, Creative Learning Center, the Ronald McDonald House, and Hope Lodge.
   
 John Howard Philligin III
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

John Howard Philligin III is a junior double major in violin performance and music education from Fayetteville, NC. John is a member of the Suzuki Association of the Americas, American String Teachers Association, and instructor of violin and viola with the ECU String Project. John has been recognized on the Dean’s List. He has received the Mary Ruth Hardy Violin Scholarship and has attended the Collegiate Music Educations National Conference. John has conducted the 6th grade ECU String Project Ensemble, was concertmaster of an ECU Opera Production and Dance Arts production, and was manager for Next Generation Concert as part of the Four Seasons Chamber music festival. John has attended the Eastern Regional Solo & Ensemble Festival, is a music coach at J.H. Rose High School, and violinist with the Fayetteville Symphony Orchestra. He has volunteered at the ECU School of Music audition day registration table for the past two years.
   

 Candice Lynn Ratley
ECTC Scholarship Recipient

Candice Lynn Ratley is a junior biology major from Wilson, NC. Candice is a member of Alpha Epsilon Delta Pre-Med Honor Society, Tri-Beta Biology Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, ECO-Pirates, and Baptist Campus Ministries. As part of Baptist Campus Ministry, Candice has volunteered in Brazil. She has been recognized on the Dean’s List and Honor Roll. She is also a member of the Jarvis Leadership Program and is an undergraduate assistant to the biology department. Candice participates in the Student Recreation Center’s Parents’ Night Out each month, and volunteers at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern North Carolina, the American Cancer Society Hope Lodge, Relay For Life, and Sam’s 5k Run All-Day annual event. Candice is also a resident advisor. Her father is a 1989 graduate of ECU.
   
 Whitney Diane Sibol
Washington/Metro Alumni Chapter Scholarship Recipient

Whitney Diane Sibol is a junior double major in marketing and communication from Kingsville, MD. She has been recognized on ECU’s Honor Roll and the Dean’s List. Whitney is a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority and is the alumnae relations chair, public relations chair, house manager, and has started an alumnae newsletter that is distributed quarterly to more than 600 Sigma sorority women. She is also vice president of ECU’s National Panhellenic Council and was the public relations director in 2009. Whitney is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America and serves on the community service committee. She is also the Student City Campus Manger. Whitney has volunteered for the Boys & Girls Club of Pitt County, Operation Christmas Child, the American Red Cross, and to raise funds for the Robbie Page Memorial through her sorority’s annual Rock-A-Thon.
   

 Kaitlyn Christina Stover

Kaitlyn Christina Stover is a sophomore nursing major from Stockton, NJ. Kaitlyn is a member of Phi Eta Sigma and ECU’s Student Pirate Club. She joined the Freshmen Experience Program during her first year at ECU. She has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List each semester in attendance at ECU for her 4.0 GPA. She volunteers at the Pirate Tutoring Center and feels this to be her biggest accomplishment to instill in other students the passion she has to achieve greatness in life. Kaitlyn volunteers for Race for the Cure.
   

 Yoojin Suh
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient

Yoojin Suh is a senior nursing major with a minor in art from Korea who currently resides in Goldsboro, NC. Yoojin is a second year recipient of the Alumni Scholarship who has also received ALAANA academic recognition and a certificate of appreciation from ECU’s Office of International Affairs. She is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, and Phi Eta Sigma. Yoojin has been the secretary and vice president of the Spanish Club and is currently an ambassador of the International Student Association, where she has also been secretary. She is member of the Asian Student Association, Multicultural Student Nursing Association, and East Carolina Association of Nursing Students. Yoojin has been recognized on both the Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists. She is a member of the music band at the Student Newman Center and the Symphonic Band where she plays flute. She has performed for the appreciation luncheon hosted by International Affairs and at graduation receptions for international students. She is a math tutor at Austin Lab and has volunteered for the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina and the Family Support Network of North Carolina.
   

 Jennifer Marie Warren
ECTC Scholarship Recipient

Jennifer Marie Warren is a sophomore exercise physiology major from Goldsboro, NC. Jennifer is a member of the ECU Honors Program, Alpha Epsilon Delta Honors Pre-Health Society, and ECU Ambassadors. She has previously received the Dowdy Student Stores Book Scholarship, J. Morris Worrick Scholarship, St. Paul UMC-UMM Scholarship, and the Tri-County Electric Scholarship. Jennifer is currently the corporate sponsor co-chair for ECU’s Relay For Life committee and is involved in ECU’s College Life in Young Life leadership training program. She has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List for her 4.0 GPA and recently became involved in the biomechanics lab on campus. Jennifer also plays intramural volleyball and is a sailing instructor during the summer at Camp Don Lee. Her mother is a 1983 graduate and her father is a 1981 graduate of ECU.
   
 Ryan Scott Wilson

Ryan Scott Wilson is a junior biology major from Raleigh, NC. Ryan is a second year recipient of the Alumni Scholarship who has also been nominated for Elite Pirate and is a member of the ECU Honors Program and Pre-Dental Honor Society. Ryan is currently active in the Emerging Leaders program, vice president of Rural Health Volunteer Society, member of the American Medical Student Association, Baptist Campus Ministry, and is involved in Pirate 2 Pirate mentoring where he is a board member. Ryan is an Eagle Scout. He is currently a resident advisor and team captain for intramural bowling and basketball. Ryan has received recognition on both the Chancellor’s and Dean’s Lists. He has volunteered at Pitt County Memorial Hospital, the Little Willie Center, World Changers Canada, and Relay For Life as team captain. Ryan has also volunteered at the Agape Medical and Grimesland Medical clinics along with Red Oak Assisted Living.
