Korie Ray Amberger
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient
Korie Ray Amberger is a senior
economics major and computer science and mathematics minor from
Kinston, NC. Korie is a member of ECU’s Honor Program and is an EC
Scholar. He is an Elite Pirate, and member of Phi Kapp Phi, the
Economic Society, and Financial Management Association. He is
co-creator of the Black Swan Society and the creator and president of
ECU’s Badminton Club. Korie volunteers his time by tutoring fellow
students in Japanese and tutors local Hispanic elementary students. He
was ECU’s first exchange student to attend the University of Oulu in
Finland where he studied linguistic drift. |

Blake Wesley Briese
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient
Blake Wesley Briese is a junior
finance major from Snellville, GA. Blake has been recognized on the
Dean’s List for three semesters and the Chancellor’s List in the fall
of 2007. He is a member of the ECU Men’s Varsity Swim Team, the
All-Conference team in 2007, and recipient of Conference USA’s
Commissioner’s Academic Medal. Blake is a member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor
Society and Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity, where he is currently the
co-recruitment chairman. Blake volunteers for the Ronald McDonald
House, and helps clean up Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium after home football
games. He also helps children at Winterville Elementary School build
reading skills. |

Brittany Leigh Carr
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient
Brittany Leigh Carr is a freshman
with an intended double major in Asian studies and exercise physiology
from Mount Olive, NC. In her brief time at ECU she has already been
recognized on the Chancellor’s List. Brittany is an EC Scholar, Early
Assurance Scholar, Golden LEAF Award winner, and Sam Walton Community
Scholar. She is active in the Rural Health Volunteer Society, Asian
Student Association, Alpha Epsilon Delta, and ECU’s Emerging Leaders
Program. Brittany volunteers for Pitt County Memorial Hospital, Pitt
County Recreation Department, and is a tutor at Belvoir Elementary
School. |

Abey Taddele Dessie
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient
Abey Taddele Dessie is a senior
with a double major in psychology and sociology from Greenville, NC. He
has been recognized on the Dean’s List for six semesters. Abey has held
a number of leadership roles in student organizations, including five
positions in the Student Government Association, including ECU’s
delegate to the North Carolina Association of Student Governments in
2005-2006. He is an Elite Pirate, Ledonia Wright Memorial scholar, an
outstanding circle member of Omicron Delta Kappa, was public relations
chairperson of Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology, vice
president of th East Carolina Honors program, and resident advisor and
Residence Hall Association representative for Aycock Hall. Abey has
served both the sociology and psychology departments as an
undergraduate research assistant and completed an internship at the
Pitt County District Attorney’s Office. Abey volunteers for Habitat for
Humanity and the American Red Cross.

Jonathan Joseph Edwards

Jonathan Joseph Edwards is a senior
double major in biology and chemistry from Raleigh, NC. He has been
recognized on the Chancellor’s List seven semesters. Jonathan is a
member of Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key International Honor Society, the
National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Collegiate Academy of North
Carolina Academy of Science, the Chemistry Club, current treasurer of
East Carolina Friends, and past president of Alpha Epsilon Delta. He
volunteers for PiCASO (Pitt County AIDS Service Organization), the Boys
and Girls Club, and Health Assist Free Clinic. Jonathan plans to enroll
at the Brody School of Medicine in the fall to pursue a career in
pediatric cardiology. |

Lauren Alyse Everett is a junior speech and hearing sciences major from Fayetteville, NC. She has been recognized on the Dean’s List three semesters and Chancellor’s List two semesters. Lauren is a member of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, North Carolina Speech Hearing Language Association, Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society, Healthy Pirates, and International Students Association. She volunteers for community homecare and hospice and the Boys and Girls Club.

Diana Adreea Gliga, a two-time
recipient of the Alumni Scholarship, is a junior pre-medicine (biology
and chemistry) major from Jacksonville, NC. She has been recognized on
the Chancellor’s List four semesters and once on the Dean’s List. Diana
is a recipient of the U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award, is an
Elite Pirate, Outstanding EC Scholar, and member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor
Society, Golden Key International Honor Society, National Society of
Collegiate Scholars, the American Medical Student Association, the
American Chemical Society, ECU’s Pre-Pharmacy Organization, Badminton
Club, and Textile Guild. Diana volunteers in the community for the Boys
and Girls Club, Girl Scouts, and the Grimesland Clinic. |

Andrew Hamilton Griffin
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient
Andrew Hamilton Griffin is a senior
finance major from Holly Springs, NC. He has been recognized on the
University’s Honor Roll for eight semesters, including the Dean’s List
in the fall of 2005. Andrew is active with the Student Government
Association and currently serves as vice president and director of
shipmates program. He is a member of the National Society for
Collegiate Scholars, National Honor Roll Society, ECU Men’s Rugby Club,
Duck’s Unlimited chapter, the Student Pirate Club, and Tau Kappa
Epsilon Fraternity where he served as president, scholarship chair, and
recruitment chair. In 2007 Andrew was named Greek Man of the Year and
inducted into the Greek Hall of Fame. Andrew volunteers with Uptown
Greenville, Freeboot Friday events, St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, the
Ronald Reagan Alzheimer’s Association, and Pirate Palooza.

Sarah Elizabeth Heidrick is a
junior family and consumer sciences education major from Cary, NC. She
has been recognized on the Dean’s List and Chancellor’s List while at
ECU. Sarah is a member of ECU’s Honor Program, the USDA Leadership
Learning Program, Kappa Omicron Nu Honor Society, vice president of
ECU’s Family, Career, and Community chapter, new member educator for
Kappa Delta Sorority, and vice president of Junior Panhellenic. Sarah
volunteers for Greenville’s local food bank, Habitat for Humanity, 4-H,
and coordinated the College of Human Ecology’s Women’s Financial
Workshop. |

Matthew Jacob Kane

Matthew Jacob Kane is a junior
construction management major and business and military science minor
from Fayetteville, NC. Matthew has been recognized on the Dean’s List
two semesters and Chancellor’s List three semesters. Matthew is a
member of ECU’s Honors Program, the National Society of Collegiate
Scholars, Collide Ministries, Sigma Lambda Chi Honor Fraternity,
Emerging Leaders, and the Army Cadet Association. He plays three
intramural sports, and is captain of the Army ROTC Ranger Challenge
team. Matthew volunteers for ECU Open House, Race for the Cure, Give 2
the Troops, American Red Cross blood drives, and is a Stoney Point
Volunteer Fireman. |

Lyndsey Nicole Kraynock
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient
Lyndsey Nicole Kraynock, a two-time
recipient of the Alumni Scholarship, is a senior interior design major
and marketing minor from Charlotte, NC. She has been recognized on the
Dean’s List five semesters and Chancellor’s List in the fall of 2006.
Lyndsey was the College of Human Ecology’s Celia Moh Scholarship
recipient for 2007-2008 and has showcased two interior design projects
for the department at various symposiums. She is a member of the
National Society of Collegiate Scholars, Golden Key International
Honors Society, ECU Ambassadors, student chapter of the American
Society of Interior Designers, and secretary of East Carolina Friends.
Through ECU Ambassadors Lyndsey serves as an official representative of
the University by volunteering for various campus and community
activities. Lyndsey mentors elementary aged children 2-3 hours per week
through East Carolina Friends.

Tiffany Hoi-Yan Lee
Alumni Association Scholarship Recipient
Tiffany Hoi-Yan Lee is a sophomore
double major in biology and communication with a minor in neuroscience
from Greenville, NC. She has been recognized on the Dean’s List five
semesters. Tiffany is an EC Scholar, Ledonia Wright Scholar, and
recognized on the National Dean’s List. She served as vice president of
Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society in 2006-2007, and is a member of Phi
Kappa Phi, Golden Key International Honor Society, the Rural Health
Club, and member of the Greenville Summer Pop Philharmonic. Tiffany is
an early assurance student to the Brody School of Medicine and
organized the “Hope Lodge Musical Banquet” for cancer patients. She
spearheaded “Planting Seeds of Kindness: Operation Green” at the Walter
B. Jones Rehabilitation Center and the “Feed a Body, Feed a Mind”
project. Tiffany volunteers for the Pitt County Humane Society, Give 2
the Troops, and the Food Bank of Eastern Carolina. |

Katie Elizabeth Maloney is a junior “degree-in-three” speech and hearing sciences major from Kinston, NC, and is a second generation Pirate. She has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List three semesters. Katie is an EC Scholar, and member of the Honors Program and Walter and Marie Williams Leadership Program. She is also active in ECU Ambassadors, the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, the Student Pirate Club, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Invisible Children United, and plays intramural flag football and soccer. Katie is a tutor at Belvoir Elementary School, a vacation bible school leader, and volunteers for Easter Seals and Relay For Life.

Anne Elizabeth Michener is a junior
interior design major from New Bern, NC. Anne is a resident assistant,
secretary for Rotaract, and member of ECU’s student chapter of the
American Society of Interior Designers, and Campus Christian
Fellowship. Anne is a Rotary Scholar and has previously received the
Celia Moh Scholarship for interior design. She has been recognized on
both the Dean’s and Chancellor’s Lists. Anne enjoys volunteering in the
community for the Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity, and hospice
care.

Amanda Katherine Nicholas is a junior art major from Fort Belvoir, VA, and a third generation Pirate. She has been recognized on both the Dean’s and Chancellor’s Lists since entering ECU. Amanda is an EC Scholar and member of Phi Kappa Phi, the Honors Program, and Golden Key International Honor Society. She is active in the ECU Painting Guild, Badminton Club, and recreational bowling league. Amanda volunteers at the Boys and Girls Club and painted a mural at Belvoir Elementary School, where she also mentors students.

Ashley Lynne Person is a junior nutrition and dietetics major and exercise and sport science minor from Louisburg, NC, and is a second generation Pirate. She has been recognized on the Chancellor’s List for five semesters. Ashley is in the Honors Program, Kappa Omicron Nu, Phi Kappa Phi, the Student Dietetic Association, where she has served as historian and vice president, and the North Carolina Folic Acid Community Ambassador group. She volunteers for health fairs, congenital heart disease awareness day, hunger banquets, and promotes folic acid awareness.

Elise Kathleen Phillips

Elise Kathleen Phillips is a junior
communications major and international studies minor from Jacksonville,
NC. She is a tutor for Project HEART, features editor for ECU’s student
newspaper, The East Carolinian, and public relations specialist for His
Glory Ministries. In 2007 Elise received the Spanish IV Award and
participated in the World AIDS Day Walk. She has been on three mission
trips to Brazil and Mexico, where she helped build churches in rural
areas. |

for three semesters. Kyla is an EC Scholar, president of the ECU Silver
Wings chapter, secretary of the Scuba Club, member of Phi Eta Sigma

Steven Garrett Thames, a three-time
recipient of the Alumni Scholarship, is a junior criminal justice major
and security studies minor from Morehead City, NC. Steven has been
recognized on both the Dean’s and Chancellor’s Lists numerous times and
received both the Jarvis Leadership and Emerging Leader Awards in 2006.
He is a member of the ECU Ambassadors, Student Government Association
judicial branch, Omicron Delta Kappa, Alpha Sigma Alpha, the ECU Honors
Program, Collide Ministry, and ECU club swimming. Steven has interned
for NC Senator Richard Burr and Judge Paul Quinn. He volunteers for
Relay For Life, Beach Sweep, hurricane relief, and the Boys and Girls

Elizabeth “Lily” Joyce Trout is a
sophomore clinical laboratory science major from Lynchburg, VA. She has

ECU. Lily is an EC Scholar and member of the National Society of
Collegiate Scholars, Phi Kappa Phi, Golden Key International Honor
Society, Phi Eta Sigma, the American Medical Student Association, Rural
Health Volunteer, Black Swan Society, Victory Campus Ministries, and
treasurer of the ECU Fencing team. She also participated in the East
Carolina Physicians Shadowing program in the fall of 2007. Lily

Kristin JoAnn Wainwright is a
junior nursing major from Greenville, NC. She has been recognized on
both the Dean’s and Chancellor’s Lists while in college. Kristin is a
North Carolina Nurse Scholar and Tylenol Scholar. She is secretary of
the North Carolina Association of Nursing Students, treasurer of the
East Carolina Association of Nursing Students, and member of the
National Student Nurses Association. Kristin’s volunteer activities
include numerous community events such as American Red Cross Blood
drives, clothing drives, and canned food drives. Kristin also spent a
year with the Peace Corps.
