The ECU Alumni Association recognizes alumni and friends for their service to the military through the Distinguished Military Service Society (DMSS). Recipients are honored each year at the DMSS Dinner and Ceremony.
The Distinguished Military Service Society honors those who have been a vital part of our national strength and success. For a large part of its history, ECU students, staff, faculty, and supporters have played a strong role in advancing our nation through contributions to its defense and contributions to East Carolina University.
The Society was carefully crafted to ensure that people who were not necessarily ECU graduates could be considered for membership, as well as people who did not necessarily serve on active duty. While most inductees are ECU alumni and most did serve on active duty, the Society wanted to have the latitude to honor people who have done great things for this university and the nation’s security regardless of attending ECU or serving active duty.
Attendance at the DMSS Dinner and Ceremony is required by all recipients. All recipients should adhere to a standard of moral and ethical conduct and must be a person of such integrity, stature, and demonstrated ability that the faculty, staff, students, and alumni of ECU will take pride in, and be inspired by their accomplishments.

DMSS Nomination Guidelines:
X All nominations and supporting materials must be submitted by July 19, 2023. Late submissions will not be considered.
X Resumes and other supporting materials are not required, however, it does strengthen a submission and provides a more fulsome snapshot for the selection committee’s review and consideration.
X Honorees are required to attend the DMSS Induction Dinner on Friday, November 3, 2023 as part of their acceptance of this honor.
X All nominators will be contacted once a decision is made prior to public announcement as a courtesy.
X Nominations not selected will be kept on file for one year and resubmitted for consideration the following year (total of two (2) years for consideration).
